The Camouflaged Truth
Event: Apr 07, 2012
6:30pm - 8:30pm

McKinley Phippslg

Please join us for a free film screening of THE CAMOUFLAGE TRUTH, directed by Michael Shahin.

On September 21, 2001, platinum rap artist Mckinley “Mac” Phipps Jr. was convicted of killing a 19-year-old man during a club show he was headlining. Though another man confessed to the crime, Phipps remains in jail, serving a 30-year prison term. Based on the confession, and the flimsy eyewitness testimony he was convicted with, it is widely believed in the rap community that he is an innocent man who is a victim of the corrupt, Louisiana justice system.  Featuring commentary by DJ Raj Smooth, and Q93 radio personality Wild Wayne (45 minutes)  A short discussion will follow the screening.  Guest Speaker, Sheila Phipps – mother of Mckinley Phillips Jr.

Admission free
– SEATING IS LIMITED.  Co-presented by Charitable Film Network and Press Street’s Antenna Gallery.  For more information or to rsvp contact info@press-street.com.  Please follow Mac’s story on Facebook.

Speaker Bio & Statement:
Sheila Phipps a self taught artist and mother of six, was born and raised in New Orleans, LA.  Shelia established herself as a portrait and abstract artist and has been working professionally for over 25 years.

“As the mother of a son who has been wrongfully convicted, the fight for justice has been a long and tedious process.  Having had appeal after appeal turned down for a new trial over and over again is very heartbreaking; not only for me and his father but for his son, fiancee, brothers and sisters, our extended family and his fans alike.  My goal is to shed light on my son’s situation and the cases of many other wrongfully accused and or harshly convicted persons and families across this country who suffer as much as we have.  I want to thank the featured incarcerated and exonerated participants and their families for sharing their stories with us.  We will continue to fight to bring national exposure to the injustice of the penal system.”
